Annual Fishing Tournament a Success Despite Unfavourable Weather

0

Charlestown, Nevis 7th May 2019 – The Indian Castle Fisher folk Association, held its 6th annual fishing tournament on Monday 6th May.

The venue for the event was the Indian Castle bay, as per usual.

The various captains and crew members, showed up at around 5 am with the intention of pushing out to sea, but unfavourable sea conditions, forced a late start, as they wisely waited for the dangerous waves to subside.

Later, the majority of the captains opted not to venture out to sea, but the captains of COM –C and MAUDE decided to brave the conditions and got the competition going.

As the crowd thickened at the venue, sometime after 3 pm the two boats were spotted coming back in and shouts of jubilation went up, as many persons admitted praying for the safety of the brave fishermen, as the sea conditions remained generally ominous.

The boats were duly pulled in and their respective catches were duly inspected and weighed and then followed the mad rush, as dozens of persons tried to get in line to buy several pounds of the precious fish.

Occupational Safety & Health

Workers (People), it is good to sing the praises to our God and the St.Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union.

Listen to me, it is said: “Words make us arrive at thoughts, music make us feel and feeling but a song makes feel a thought (a process of thinking, a concept or idea). What better thoughts could we feel when this Union expresses its love for us around negotiating table when it comes to the collective bargaining challenge on safety and health at work.

People who love money will always want more and striving to amass it (accumulate), they will bring on themselves pains/health problems.

We all need money, of course. It provides a measure of protection but let me ask you a question: Can a person be truly happy if he has only enough for his basic needs? If I have to answer that I would say absolutely (Yes).

Workers, this Union is educating you in regard to occupational safety and health. At times powerful forces have tried to keep you down but I am saying to you pay attention to your health and safety.

Hello! If and when any figures are reported, they represent only a fraction of the real situation of the real situation, owing to the fact that many accidents are never reported and many industrial diseases go unrecognized. Chemical hazards, noise and those which are not easily detected and produce no obvious (easy to see or understand) immediate effect on the health of the worker, one can guess at the number of workers in St.Kitts-Nevis who suffer from diseases caused by the ever-increasing use of these insidious hazards introduced annually into the workplace.

Hear this: Economic considerations often override any thought of the health and safety of the worker. It would be wrong to give the impression that the problem is confined solely to the process of industrialisation that has taken place here.

Certainly, the experience of industrialisation to develop on a large scale has made us more aware of the horrors (extreme fear) that can be associated with work and has gradually revealed that the progress of technology considerable human and social deficits as well as benefits.

However, if you take St.Kitts as a whole, the majority of workers are from the rural areas. Such workers also face a variety of hazards in the daily fight to survive. People listen to the St.Kitts-Nevis Trades & Labour.

Thanking you.

Prince Harry and Meghan have healthy baby boy

LONDON (AP) — The Latest on the newest royal baby in Britain (all times local): 2:45 p.m.

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, are the proud parents of a new baby boy.

The baby, who has not yet been named, is seventh in line for the British throne and is Queen Elizabeth II’s eighth great-grandchild.

It is the first child for Harry and Meghan, who married a year ago. Harry spoke before cameras on Monday afternoon.

The duchess is a 37-year-old retired American actress formerly known as Meghan Markle. The 34-year-old prince is the son of Prince Charles — next in line for the throne — and Princess Diana, who died in a Paris car crash in 1997.

Harry has long spoken of his desire to start a family.

Prince Harry’s wife Meghan went into labor early Monday with their first child, Buckingham Palace said.

Palace officials didn’t immediately say where Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, is giving birth. She was formerly known as Meghan Markle and was a TV star before retiring from acting to marry Harry.

Officials said the prince was by Meghan’s side. No other details were released.

The couple has said they didn’t find out the baby’s sex in advance.

The infant will be seventh in line to the British throne and Queen Elizabeth II’s eighth great-grandchild. Harry is the younger son of Prince Charles, the next in line to the throne, and the late Princess Diana, who died in a Paris car crash in 1997.

The child will be eligible for dual British-U.S. citizenship if Meghan and Harry want to go through the application process.

Harry and Meghan married at St. George’s Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle a year ago this month. In April, they moved from a house on the London grounds of Kensington Palace to Frogmore Cottage, which is near Windsor Castle, where they held their gala, VIP-studded wedding reception.

Journalists and well-wishers have camped out for days in Windsor, about 35 kilometers (22 miles) west of London, awaiting the baby’s arrival. Kensington Palace has said the new parents don’t plan to pose for a photograph or appear in public with their baby for several days so they can celebrate privately.

Meghan, a California native, had a starring role on the American TV series “Suits.” She had a previous marriage that ended in divorce and has strong feminist views. As the daughter of a black mother and a white father, she says she identifies as biracial.

Harry, who has said he wanted to protect his wife from intrusive media coverage, and Meghan have said they plan to keep many of the details of the birth private.

Chris Gayle returns to Jamaica Tallawahs in CPL

Chris Gayle will return to Jamaica Tallawahs in the CPL after a gap of two seasons. Tallawahs announced Gayle as their marquee player on Saturday for the upcoming season in September-October, with the draft scheduled to take place on May 22.

“We are delighted to have Chris playing for his home team for the 2019 season,” Tallawahs COO Jeff Miller said in a release. “There is no bigger name in Twenty20 cricket, and we can’t wait for him to arrive and make the Jamaican fans proud. We are looking forward to Chris being a big part of our push for a third CPL title.”

Gayle previously led Tallawahs to their two titles in 2013 and 2016, and also top-scored in both those finals against Guyana Amazon Warriors. He left them after the 2016 season to join St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and led them to the final in 2017 and the playoffs in 2018. Returning to his home team now, he will be one of the captaincy options for Tallawahs.

Gayle is the leading run-scorer in CPL with a tally of 2111 and has three centuries in the league, all for Tallawahs. They will be playing five home games at Sabina Park this time, once the tournament starts on September 4, compared to last season when three of the five Tallawahs designated home matches were played in Florida to satisfy an agreement signed by the Tallawahs Florida-based ownership group.

Pete Russell, COO of the CPL, stated at a press conference in Guyana last month that the CPL would not be playing any games in Florida for the 2019 season due to poor attendance. The Tallawahs 2018 matches against Guyana Amazon Warriors and Trinbago Knight Riders drew strong support for the visitors in Florida but not the Tallawahs, which sparked critical comments from captain Andre Russell. The third match played by Tallawahs in Florida against Barbados Tridents only drew 700 people compared to sellout crowds at Sabina Park.

Gayle will be playing the World Cup – after which he is expected to retire from ODIs – having ended the IPL in good form this year. He scored 462 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 158.76 and average of 42, with four half-centuries, for Kings XI Punjab.

Curacao officials board Scientology ship in measles case

WILLEMSTAD, Curacao (AP) — Authorities in Curacao on Saturday boarded a ship that arrived under quarantine to start vaccinating people to prevent a measles outbreak.

Health officials said only those who already have been vaccinated or have previously had measles will be free to leave the 440-foot (134-meter) ship Freewinds, which belongs to the Church of Scientology.

Curacao epidemiologist Dr. Izzy Gerstenbluth told The Associated Press that a small team is assessing more than 300 people aboard the ship, and that the process might take more than a day.

“We will go on board and do our job,” he said, adding that authorities have an international obligation to avoid spreading the disease. “If we allow that to happen, measles spreads in places where the risk of severe complications is much bigger, especially when we’re talking about poor countries where people have a lower level of resistance.”

Authorities worry people aboard the ship might have been exposed after a female crew member was diagnosed with measles after coming back from Europe. Gerstenbluth said she arrived on the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao on April 17 and visited a doctor April 22 for cold symptoms. A blood sample was taken and sent to nearby Aruba, where officials confirmed it was measles on April 29, a day after the ship had departed for St. Lucia. Curacao health officials then alerted authorities in St. Lucia.

The Freewinds was under quarantine in St. Lucia earlier this week before it returned to its home port of Curacao early Saturday.

Gerstenbluth said it would be easy to spread the disease given that it’s a small ship.

“This is what happens when we don’t vaccinate,” he said.

Symptoms include runny nose, fever and a red-spotted rash. Most people recover, but measles can lead to pneumonia, brain swelling and even death in some cases.

Measles has sickened more than 700 people in 22 U.S. states this year, with federal officials saying the resurgence is driven by misinformation about vaccines.

Church officials have not returned calls for comment. According to the church’s website, the ship is the home of “a religious retreat ministering the most advanced level of spiritual counseling.” It says religious conventions and seminars also are held aboard.

Reportedly, as a result, he fired a single gunshot with his licenced firearm in the direction of the person.

Shot and injured in the neck was 22-year-old Dijourn Richardson of Buckley’s who had previously been doing electrical work on the premises with his stepfather.

He was transported to the Joseph N France General Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery and is presently warded in a critical condition.

Rawlins, along with his firearm, were taken into police custody.

This media house understands that the wounded young man works with his Stepfather Dwayne Woodley of Woodley’s Electrical Services.

It is alleged that on the morning of the incident, the homeowner called Woodley at around 6:30 am informing him that there was something that needed checking out at the property to which Woodley replied that he would pass by when he got the chance.

According to further details, that morning, the stepfather-son pair while heading to a job in Sandy Point stopped by the Old Road work site to pick up a drop cord needed for the work assignment.

Woodley who is said to have had keys to the property asked Richardson who had checked the garbage in search of the cord to check on the inside using the keys to the house.

Furthermore, it is alleged that after hearing the shot fired, Woodley ran inside and found his stepson lying bloodied on the ground and was met by Rawlins who apologised saying he did not know it was Richardson.

To date, Richardson is said to be experiencing no movement of his lower body.

As gathered, Rawlins is in his 20s also.
