St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots Capture Exciting Historic Win; Loses Momentum On Second Go

0

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 13th September 2019)-The home franchise team- the St.Kitts and Nevis Patriots- had an  exciting historic win but unfortunately their winning ways did not did not roll over into game two during the first two home games of the CPL T20 league played at Warner Park Cricket Stadium on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

In game one (10th September), in going up against the Jamaica Tallawahs, the Patriots chased down 241 runs- the highest run chase in CPL history which was also the highest team total in CPL history as well as the second highest successful run chase in all T20 cricket.

That game also had the most sixes in a T20 game with 37 in total. The crowd went wild with excitement each time as the Patriots created a wave of excitement creeping up on the Tallwahs nearing the end of the match.

Game two played the next day (Wednesday), saw Patriots versus the Barbados Tridents in an atmosphere of tamer encounter with failed batting by the Patriots.

In that match, Laurie Evans got the only stand out batsman status while Sandeep Lammchine who played for the Patriots last year got 3 wickets.

This week, this media house spoke exclusively with local cricket icon Victor Eddy –a former St.Kitts Leeward Islands and Combine Islands all-rounder and Vice-Captain of St. Kitts B Team tour to Zimbawe. He gave his take on CPL T20 this time around.

“For CPL 2019 how it’s going, it has been very impressive. The defending champions, the Trinidad and Tobago Knight Riders, they look very strong again competing and also too is the Guyana Amazon Warriors. Well, you cannot write off the Tallawahs, I believe also too so I believe between these three teams, two are going to be in the finals in my view but cricket as it is a game of glories and  uncertainties; we can never tell with the amount of matches to go but looking at  the strength of the Trinidad Knight Riders with three top sin bowlers in that squad and between three top spin bowlers, they can bowl 12 overs so if teams do not capitalize on  those 12 overs, Trinidad Knight Riders is going to be very hard to defeat in this 2019 CPL tournament  and that is my view which can all go contrary to what I’ve said because just remember cricket is the game of glories and uncertainties,” he commented.

Asked what he has to say about the St.Kitts and Nevis Patriots, Eddy replied: “The Patriots had an outstanding game against the Jamaica Tallawahs because in a 2020 to erase 241, it was not an easy task but it was well executed by the batsmen and as more so Devon Thomas and Evin Lewis whoopeed the innings; they gave a good foundation  towards the start because they shot selection was very good and in their future matches, if their batting can have that same percentage  of good judgement and shot selection, they also can do good. Well, all teams in the CPL would have a chance that is only my view because cricket is still a game of glories and uncertainties.”

The home games at Warner Park  featuring the Patriots are slated for tomorrow (Saturday 14th September) with the Guyana Amazon Warriors, on Sunday with the St.Lucia Zouks and then on Tuesday 17th with the Trinbago Knight Riders.

Father Of Murdered Beauty Pageant Visitor To SKN Calls For Death Penalty

0

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Friday 13th September 2019)-The father of a well-known ‘beauty and brain’ pageant participant, 27-year-old Taitu Goodwin, who was a delegate in the first annual Miss Black San’ International Swimsuit Pageant held in April 2017 in St.Kitts, is calling for the death penalty in the case of an ex-boyfriend who alleged stabbed her to death earlier this week in Anguilla.

Her father Bruce Goodwin, Antigua and Barbuda’s former Ambassador to Cuba, aired such sentiments during a live telephone interview on ABS television on the day in question describing her to be “My most beautiful, brightest best of out all of my 11 children. She was the love of my life, the greatest love of my life” as he furthered his call for “the death penalty for murderers.”

Details from the Public & Media Relations Department in Anguilla said the incident involving this “tragic death” took place on Monday 9th September at about 4:30 AM in the Windward Point Area.

To date, Glenville Hodge, a 23yr old male of Island Harbour has been charged for the offence of Goodwin’s murder and remanded to Her Majesty Prison.

According to Goodwin, the accused killer was his daughter’s “boyfriend until a year ago when she separated from him.”

He added: “He has been obsessed with her since then, [harassing] her on several occasions until finally in the wee hours of this morning, he apparently broke into her apartment where she lived alone and he murdered her brutally.”

As gathered, Taitu -who originally hails from Antigua and Barbuda- moved to Anguilla some years ago with her mother.

“…she was a teacher in the school system down there. She went to study law which was her passion. She studied law at the University of Cardiff in Wales and at the University of [Université Catholique de] Lyon in France and just last year, she graduated with her Master’s Degree in Trade and Investment law from the University of St John’s University [School of Law] in New York and her most beautiful and shining dream were to practice in her legal profession and rise within that profession as an accomplished lawyer,” the grieving dad said.

Additionally, he told that she was a linguist who spoke several languages.

It is understood that she was the head of her department at the Ministry of Finance in Anguilla.

Goodwin said she visited Antigua regularly and stayed with him with her most recent visit being about two months ago.

Notably, Taitu was crowned Miss Anguilla in 2012 and also placed second runner-up in Miss Jaycees in 2013 during the annual carnival festivities in her birth country of Antigua and Barbuda.

“She was certainly one of the best and brightest of her generation. She was also a beauty queen if I can say that even though I never approved of her entering that kind of pageantry. She was so accomplished in every field. Her personality is beyond description interims of its beauty and all of her friends would regard her as being jovial, conversational and witty and all those things.”

Taitu Goodwin poses in this photo said to have taken specifically for the Miss. Black San’ International Swimwear competition when she visited St.Kitts-Nevis

In commenting on what should happen to his daughter’s accused murdered, he stated: “I have always been an advocate of the death penalty for murderers…and I continue to be an advocate of the death penalty. It may not be 100% effective as a deterrent but it still has some deterrence  and if our judiciary had not gone soft on murderers and criminals, many of those who have died at the hands of these demonic personalities would still be alive today and so I think it would be for my beloved Taitu and I am calling on my judiciary to return to the days when they were tough against demonic perpetrators like the brutal murderers we have strutting around in the Caribbean thinking ‘Oh, I can do as I like with other people’s lives and I will spend a few years in jail and come out  and walk about the place and be happy  just as if nothing had happened. They must be hanged by their necks until they are dead.

The Black San’ committee has expressed condolences via its social media Facebook account saying in part: “Taitu was a delegate in the first ever Miss. Black San’ International but due to circumstances beyond our control, she did not compete on show night. However, she spent the entire week in St. Kitts with us and we enjoyed her company. She was a very strong and determined individual which made her stood out. This unfortunate news has hit us hard. We constantly follow the progress of our past delegates and this is certainly not the type of information we wish to receive.”

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 6th September 2019) – Eustacia Morton, a 20-year-old female from St.Kitts-Nevis, who is currently attending university in the US, has launched a feminine hygiene care brand called Nat’ral Luxuries described to be 100% natural.

“It’s all natural products made with selected herbs to help cure and heal the vagina naturally. We the products goddess bar, feminine wash and also detox pearls. We also plan to come out with different products along the way. Most of our products is for yeast infection, vagina viruses and even people with fibroids which is for the detox pearls and it also helps with vagina wetness, like natural feminine issues,” she revealed during an exclusive interview with this reporter at a recent pop-up-shop on Fort Street.

Entrepreneur Eustacia Morton (left) seen with her assistance Vikell Edwards-Douglas (aback right side) and her friend Caylin Stapleton at the pop-up-shop for the Nat’ral Luxuries product line (Spokesman Snap)

Product ingredients include aloe vera, essential oils, coconut oil and cocoa butter oils.

Commenting on what motivated her to come up with the product line, she shared: “I was inspired because I realised that young teenagers and women like myself have issues with yeast infection especially like how we have hot climate in S.Kitts-Nevis, and I also realise that most of them don’t know how to take care of their vagina so I did some research and found herbs because we believe that the power of healing is in the environment. It’s been going really good; I really want to focus on natural products because chemicals do not belong on or in your vagina.”

The items are produced in Miami at her school Florida International University where she is a third year student studying Biology and Agriculture.  The product line was launched in December 2018.

“Along the way, I plan to go to medical school to become a doctor but a herbalist because I don’t want to deal with the pills and so forth,” she said.

Morton’s  male assistance Vikell Edwards-Douglas talked about the product sold the fastest that day.

“We started at 11am today and we had 60 pearls and the pearls were the first to finish because persons would have been hearing about the buzz about the pearls and how amazing they work from. The pearls are an inside cleanser for the vagina and they clean the vagina and the womb. What they do is they get rid of dry skin, dead cells, blood clots and mucus and it cleans it out. Additionally, for those of you who have issues conceiving and what’s not, it also helps in that area. The products give the vagina a natural scent not a sweet scent…” he informed.

Quizzed about the most popular item, Morton remarked: “I would say the most popular product is the goddess bar but the pearls have just been released and it looks like they would take over an we have three different scents in the wash- natural, mint and lavender and the mint is the favourite for many females but my favourite is the lavender because I just love the scent.”

The young entrepreneur, who hails from the St. Peter’s community in Stapleton Village, said customer feedback has been really good.

“ My customers have been pushing me to bring out more products but  I have to do some more research to be accurate and make sure that they actually work because it’s not just about the money.”

In providing hygiene advice to her gender peers, Morton had this to say: “The most important thing is to stop using those high brand soaps because most of them have chemicals and those are what really throws off your pH balance so if you don’t have the natural stuff just use water instead of those high brand stuff.”

Furthermore, she recommends that hygiene care in young girls start at an early age.

“I would say at the age of 12 or when you start your menstruation because that is when your body start releasing most of the toxins so I would advise the parents to educate their children on these stuff and the parents need to be educated also.”

Occupational Safety and Health

0

Workers (People), let me share this with you; many parts of the world when walk into a food store to pick stuff whether it’s meat, milk we do so with confidence that items are free of contamination (poisonous and that the label on the package is accurate (the truth).

Hello! Hear this: the kind of product reliability (able to be trusted) was not developed overnight. Years ago, we were not guaranteed (formal assurance) of either or truth labelling. Since then, governments passed laws in assuring us as consumers that the quality of product from food to perfume. They require standardized (level of quality) labelling and strict safety tests.

Workers (People), when I think about such laws as these, I am reminded that we should appreciate the St. Kitts- Nevis Trades & Labour Union and government. Chaos (confusion) would be dominant without it. I am saying all the time my writings, laws must be enforced to safeguard the health and safety and also the well-being of the public.

Let me move on. I see how stiff necked some people are. Workers, supervisors and managers-their eyes are always on the goal (aim or purpose) ahead; they seem to take little notice of Occupational Safety and Health and in doing, they leave no time for planning, they leave no time planning once they get things done. They don’t care so again I am appealing to you all to create the ‘Awareness’ (informed mindfulness).

Before I close, I give thanks that I am fearfully and wonderfully made; I see the beauty of life and the goodness of God reflected in others. Even our bodies begin to wear out or burdened with disease or aging, they still offer the opportunity to learn more about ourselves and the One who created us.

Let me give thanks all the time to Sir Joseph Nathaniel France, Dr. Alan Le serve and George De Paen; they were good men. They had knowledge as well as wisdom (involving sensible decision making) needed for workers’ care and workplaces to grapple with this topic by letting you know. Do not allow negative circumstances to weigh you down. That’s why I am communicating to you weekly in the Labour Spokesman.

It is the foundation of a close relationship between you and I that is what prompt me asking all the workers to get serious. Please! Please! Do not be afraid of what man try to do. Educational experience teaches good work habits, communication skills and confidence.

I am closing now. What is you answer to this question: Have you ever thought about what it is to be safe and healthy? Again, I say thanks to the persons whose names I have mentioned in this article.

NOTE WELL* MSSAGE FOR STIFF- NECKED PEOPLE

“Loosen up” is today’s word from Good. Flexibility is not simply for athletes but is a virtue (moral goodness) that helps us to move with grace through the challenges of work and family life. Stiff-necked people are very focused and tasked-oriented.

Words and meaning

Focus- concentrate so that the image is clear

Task-oriented- things specified where a piece of work is required to be done.

Opposition: We Were Ready To Debate ‘Overseas Voters’ Bill

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 6th September 2019) – The ‘Ayes’ had it earlier this week in parliament when a motion was moved to take off the item of ‘The National Assembly Election Bill Amendment Bill 2019’ which fell under public business on the order paper, surrounding the proposed condition that nationals living overseas should return home and spend a period of six months ahead of elections.

“Mr. Speaker, I rise with your leave to move a motion pursuant to number 63 of the rules of this honourable house for the withdrawal of the bill entitled The National Assembly Election Bill Amendment Bill 2019 which had its reading in March 28th 2018,” Attorney General Vincent ‘Juicy’ Byron Jr. commented on Tuesday 3rdSeptember without giving reason(s) why the change of plans to address the subject that day.

Opposition Leader of the St.Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) and immediate former Prime Minister Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, while speaking on the Party’s sponsored ‘Issues’ programme on Freedom FM the next day (Wednesday), said the bill was “withdrawn… when we were all prepared to debate this matter in the parliament of our country.”

As understood from his presentation, named candidates of the governing parties of the Team Unity Government have been pushing for this bill because polls conducted showed that the SKNLP has more registered voters overseas.

“What I think is really alarming and which I believe needs to be highlighted is that this matter was not only being pursued by supporters of the government of the day. We found that there were ministers of government, candidates in particular of the governing parties who went out of their way to make sure that this piece of legislation would still come to the parliament even though since last year people were making it very very clear that this was a wrong thing to do.”

Dr. Douglas continued: “These guys had done their various analysis of the present register and realised that they could not defeat the Labour candidates in different constituencies. The only way, therefore, is to make sure that those who are overseas and who are supporters of Labour would be prevented the opportunity because as you have always heard, they felt that Labour had more people register to vote living overseas than those who are PAM supporters and supporters of the other parties. They knew exactly what the polls that they had conducted were saying that despite all that [Prime Minister] Harris was doing , he had now become very desperate, the time had come  because of his desperation  to prevent him and his government from becoming a one-term government, and as a result of that efforts were made to disenfranchise these voters.”

In giving the opposition’s position on the issue, he explained: “What this piece of legislation was seeking to do was to visit the existing piece of legislation- The National Assembly Elections Bill- which was removing the opportunity of some voters to vote in the upcoming elections. What it meant really was that you could not vote as an overseas national unless you were residing in our country for six months prior to the date that you were registered to vote. Mind you, you could not vote as an overseas national unless you were residing in the constituency in which you were registered, unless you were there for six months prior to the date that you were registering to vote.”

“It means also that if you were a student or you were some kind of a contract worker and you were born in St.Kitts, never lost the citizenship you have- but you were temporarily overseas, you also would have been prevented from voting  if the legislation was allowed to be passed in our parliament yesterday. The question must be asked therefore, which student can return home and live for six months to register,” he added.

The SKNLP top official thanked those overseas nationals who have expressed their concerns relating to the matter.

“The power of their collective responsibility in speaking out to preserve a right that they already have; not that they were asking for some right to be given to them. This was already there but it was being taken away from them and that is what we said was wrong about this.”

Death toll climbs to 43

0

Bridgetown, Barbados, September 7, 2019 (The Nassu): The official death toll from Hurricane Dorian  climbed to 43, Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis advised last night.

Thirty-five of the deaths were recorded in Abaco and the remaining eight were recorded in Grand Bahama.

“We acknowledge that there are many missing and that the number of deaths is expected to significantly increase,” Minnis said in a statement.

“This is one of the stark realities we are facing in this hour of darkness.

“The loss of life we are experiencing is catastrophic and devastating. The grief we will bear as a country begins with the families who have lost loved ones. We will meet them in this time of sorrow with open arms and walk by their sides every step of the way.

“To those who have lost loved ones, I know there is absolutely nothing we can say that
will lessen your pain and loss. We offer you our shoulders to cry on, our prayers of  comfort and our promise that your loved ones will never be forgotten.”

On Thursday, Health Minister Dr. Duane Sands said he expects the final death toll to be staggering.

“I ask the Bahamian people to join me in grieving this horrible loss,” Minnis said.

“Let us pray for the dead and their families.”

Dorian pummeled Grand Bahama and Abaco for more than three days, leaving widespread devastation in its wake.
