Premier Brantley Wants Nevis’ Fair Share Of CBI Monies

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 28th August 2020) – Nevis’ Premier Mark Brantley continues to air his view that the monetary benefits of the Citizenship by Investment (CBI) programme of the Federation has seen Nevis being unfairly treated over the years and he is hoping to further address the issue at an upcoming meeting with Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris.

Brantley was at the time responding to a question posed by a reporter at his monthly press conference held on Thursday 27th August 2020.

“I continue to speak about it publicly because for many years, it appears that some were under an illusion that the CBI monies that came in from the negotiations of our passports- which is our national patrimony- that it somehow belonged to the government and people of St.Kitts, and I want to make it very clear that our passport says on it St. Christopher and Nevis, and for a lot of years Nevis was locked out.”

Brantley told that he is scheduled to sit with the Prime Minister on Friday 28th August and expressed hope that such will be “ an item on the agenda to determine what we do going forward in terms of the sharing of the Citizens By Investment monies that have come in.”

“So when Nevisians speak up it is not that we’re trying to be difficult, it’s not that we’re trying to create division, we’re saying no, we want what is rightfully ours as share,” he stated.

Brantley went on to say: “The passport is a national asset and so if it’s negotiated and hundreds of millions of dollars roll into Basseterre, I think the blindest or us can see that there has to be some equity in the sharing of those resources. So often I hear the talk because I understand that people look at projects in St. Kitts and St.Kitts appears to be shining but Nevis of course is not shining as brightly but when you look at the underlying circumstances, it is because the CBI monies are disproportionate being deployed on the island of St. Kitts and that is why I’ve always said we must encourage the kind of government which sees the nation of St.Kitts and Nevis; not the island of St. Kitts and the island of Nevis but the nation of St.Kitts and Nevis so that the resources are deployed can be deployed across the board to develop the entire country, not to develop one at the expense of the other.”

“So those conversations are important conversations. They are conversations that have will have to continue as I certainly will not relent until we have some acceptable sharing formula for those monies that are national asset; that belong to all of the people of St.Kitts and Nevis…,”

“It is our money, and so a lot of time I hear talk that St. Kitts is helping Nevis but how are you helping me if you are giving me some of what belongs to me? Think about it! How are you helping me if all I’m getting is some of what belongs to me?” he added.

Brantley applauded the current government’s efforts in the matter: “People may criticize the Team Unity Government for a variety of things; it is the only government thus far that has at least tried. You may argue if it has tried hard enough but at least it has tried to bring some semblance of balance to that, and so for the first time for example we get a monthly amount that flows from CBI. The question is whether that monthly amount properly reflects the percentage of the inflows but nevertheless we get that monthly amount that comes and this is the first time that that has happened in a sustained way, and so we have to be thankful for that because people of Nevis were completely locked out.”

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 21st August 2020) – Owner of Islander Watersports-a sea taxi business in Nevis- Wincent Perkins says although a recent arson incident has decreased his fleet, such will not stop him from going above and beyond to provide the service that he loves.

The incident which took place in two separate instances during the early morning hours of Monday 17th August 2020 damaged four of his boats near his home in the Newcastle community and also at Oualie Beach.

Interviewed by this media house on Thursday 20th August, he told: “It’s business as usual. Whatever we were doing just after the pandemic [began] we continue. It just kind of slow us down but it ain’t stop us. I wouldn’t want to boast and say it’s going to make me stronger but it motivates me because if you know me or anyone knows me this is not going to stop me…I love what I do; I love to keep people and my clients happy so I’m not going to let this stop me from going above and beyond in providing the services that I’ve dedicated to the general public and the tourism sector.”

Commenting on the financial loss to the business, he informed “if I have to replace, it will be well over US$400,000. Four boats got damaged but I managed to save one out of the four. The one that I got saved, it’s just the heat from the flames that melted the glass, and a glass to replace it has already been ordered.”

The boats lost in the flames, he had obtained in 2014, 2016 and 2017 respectively.

Perkins spoke about the numerous calls and messages from clients, institutions and other well-wishers that he has been receiving since the incident.

“I just pretty much want to thank them for all their support. I received hundreds of WhatsApp. From all over the world I get comments; a lot of people are calling me from all over the world, institutions. I got a call from the US Embassy to share their concern …we work with them (that is) the US Embassy. I have gotten calls from the owners of Four Seasons, Christophe Harbour, Paradise Hotel, Nisbett Plantation. All of the clients and institutions that we work with they reached out to us. I’m still answering emails and WhatsApp messages. For the past four days, people have been showing their support to the business and me.”

Perkins said come 25th September this year, the company will mark 16 years in operation.

Giving his thoughts on the arson incident, Perkins commented: “I’m lost for words. I don’t know what to say. It’s very shocking. I never thought that someone or anyone would have done that to this company. The company always stands ready to help and assist in any way. We do a lot of charity work; we give back a lot to the community. This morning I ordered 4000 hand sanitizers to donate to all the schools on Nevis. The hand sanitizers were just shipped this morning.”

Additionally, he shared that for the past month, he has had a crew doing some refurnishing on a school that the company is affiliated with –Nevis Academy- in an effort to make the school ready to operate amidst COVID-19.

“So we’re doing work on sanitization on the toilets and all that so that when the children go back to school their parents can feel safe knowing that their children are in a clean environment.”

Perkins has applauded the work of the police so far, and while he wished that fire and rescue services could have gotten to the scene sooner, he is thankful that in less than 20 minutes, the fighter fighters were able to get the flames under control.

He also expressed gratitude that other people were not affected.

“We have a lot of equipment in the yard and a lot more boats in the yard. There were at least six water taxis in the yard and three out of the six burned. There were eight in total so they leave me back with five. If it didn’t get under control, the neighbours would have gotten a touch of it and it had spread to the neighbours it would have gone further down and it would have been a whole block. There are two big apartments next to me. It was a big loss for me but I’m thankful that it’s just me suffering the damages and not anyone else.”

Perkins talked about his plans to beef up security in continuing plans that were in place already.

Meanwhile, a police statement indicated that: “Sometime after 1 a.m. on Monday, August 17, Mr. Perkins reported that three (3) of his boats were on fire. The vessels were parked on a lot of land near his home. The St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services were called to the scene and the Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.”

It is also said that police later received another report that Perkins’ vessel, which was on the shore at Oualie Beach, was also on fire and that port personnel at the pier were able to put the fire out.

Reportedly, members of the Forensic Department visited the scene and collected items of evidential value.

Police are making an appeal to anyone who might have any information in relation to this incident to call the Newcastle Police Station 469-9326 or 664-7667 or their nearest Police Station. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Visit Of Safe Harbour Cruise Ships Delayed

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 21st August 2020)- The visit of two vessels from the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, namely Vision of the Seas and Rhapsody of the Seas, carrying only crew members, that were expected to dock at Port Zante, St.Kitts on Wednesday 19th August to “Safe Habour” in the Federation has been rescheduled.

Minister of Tourism, Ports and Transport Lindsay Grant on the day that the ships were slated to be here, explained why the change.

“We were expecting them here sometime at about 5 O’clock Wednesday. However, there is a slight delay because our health officials after gathering some further information from the vessel, we decided to do and ask for a further intervention from them which may delay them for a couple hours or next 24 hours but we felt having gotten that information, it was incumbent upon us to ask them for some further details which we have done and which they have provided, and so we are expecting them later.

Two days before at a press conference held on Monday 17th August at the Customs and Excise conference room in Bird Rock, Minister Grant had indicated that all safety protocols must be adhered to including the requirement of a 14-day quarantine period for the 70-member crew on each ship.

“The health and safety of our nationals and residents remains our top priority as we embark on providing assistance to the cruise ships for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. This assistance represents the true nature of the Kittitian and Nevisian people which is providing help and support to others in their time of need. It is who we are as a nation. I reiterate we have adhered to all required health and safety protocols to ensure nationals and residents of St. Kitts-Nevis remain safe,” he said.

As understood, the crew members have been anchored in Barbados which is where the ships are coming from and have not disembarked the vessels while there.

In his remarks on Wednesday, he outlined that security at Port Zante will be in place to ensure that no one disembarks during the 14 -day period.

Football Association Kicks Off With Safety In Return Of Game

0

BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (Friday 21st August 2020)- In an effort to ensure that football clubs can resume training sessions in a safe manner amidst the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) pandemic, the St.Kitts-Nevis Football Association (SKNFA), has donated equipment and safety supplies to clubs at a collective value of $10,000.

On Sunday 16th August 2020, a presentation ceremony was held at the Jam Rock restaurant located in Frigate Bay located in the vicinity of ‘The Strip’. The packages contained bag of footballs, hand sanitizer, spray bottle, temperature gun and personal use water bottles.

Spokesman Snap: Representatives of football clubs and officials of the St.Kitts-Nevis Football Association (SKNFA)

Team representatives in attendance included Rams Village Superstars, Saddlers FC, Dieppe Bay, Conaree FC, Security Forces, Old Road, Newtown, Cayon, Molineux, Sandy Point, Newton Ground, Garden Hotspurs, SL Horsford St. Paul’s and Challengers.

General Secretary Stanley Jacobs pointed out that the SKNFA had suspended its football activities around the end of March 2020 due to the impact of COVD-19 and has been without any football activities since then. He noted that COVID-19 has also impacted the entire world and has significantly impacted sports, and in particular football.

Jacobs touched on the approach taken to address the topic.

The St.Kitts-Nevis Football Association, led by our global partners CONCACAF and FIFA, over the months have not been relaxing and resting but we have been putting together a plan as to how we can move forward in the new norm; how can we restart football safely for everyone. At the heart of everything we do with COVID-19, the safety of everyone is paramount and so we cannot lose focus of that, and so working with FIFA and working with CONCACAF and working with the local health authorities, we began the process of putting together our return to football, and important to that is ensuring that we had the necessary equipment, safety supplies to restart football…which took a significant amount of resources but working with FIFA and CONCACAF, we were able to secure those resources.”

We know that we cannot restart football without you our member clubs and so we’re here to distribute items to the member clubs that will put you in a better position, a safe position to play very safely

According to him: “The intention is once you get the equipment, we want to see all the clubs begin training. From our last count, out of the twenty one (21) clubs, seven (7) member clubs that were actively training. I think that number is way too low if we are looking to restart football. Now bearing in mind that the COVID-19 Task Force, these regulations that are currently in place expires on the 29th of August and effective 29th August midnight, the new regulations kick in. hoping that when the next regulations kicks in [such] would allow competitions.”

He said the current regulations allow for practice matches whilst noting “and so one of the things that we want to do beginning early next week is to begin to have a series of practice.”

SKNFA Technical Director Jeffrey ‘Pedro’ Hazel shared that: “The regulations that we are currently under indicate that there can be interclub matches so you can play amongst yourself in the various clubs and we can have clubs versus clubs so we’re moving towards that. We’ll be making an application to the Ministry of Sports, that is the protocol that was set up by the COVID-19 Task Force we go through sports to get to them, and so we’re making that application so that we can have those practice matches beginning next weekend. We know that quite a number of teams have started practicing and so we’re going to be using those teams first and then we jump start to the other teams but this is an indication for all of us to get ready so that we can get the league restarted hopefully with the new regulations as the General Secretary indicated…”

Hazel disclosed that information such as who the teams are, play location and the entire set-up would be required “so that if the task force personnel show up then we have all the proper things in place so that we can move football forward.”

Pertaining to temperature record keeping, he told that players, coaches and technical staff will have to be documented.
