The government will never admit it, but from the time free testing was introduced when the numbers started to skyrocket, this was in fact an admission that the fourth wave that has left over eight hundred persons isolated or quarantined had everything to do with Team Unity. This fourth wave tells us that no one is safe from COVID. No one is immune. COVID is not picking out. Whether you are European or Kittitian, Black or White, rich or poor — and yes, vaccinated or unvaccinated — COVID is coming for all of us.
Dr Wilkinson didn’t take the booster for a show. He knew that the two doses had worn off. But with all the bad blood that was spilled to get people to take the first two jabs, and with no previous talk of any booster or third jab, nobody wanted the task of saying ‘get a booster.’ No booster, no J’Ouvert. No booster, no Chatterbox. No booster, no soca.
The Task Force knew that Omicron was highly transmissible. Yet they allowed almost a thousand people, for all intents and purposes unvaccinated or under-vaccinated, to jam up in a space to jam, coughing in one another’s face and observing absolutely no established COVID-19 protocols, and now want to act surprised with this fourth wave.
Recall that football couldn’t play because all the footballers were not vaccinated. Recall too that unvaccinated calypsonians couldn’t sing. All suggestions of rapid testing were ignored because it sounded too much like what Dr Drew had recommended almost a year before. And so these mass events were allowed — FULLY VACCINATED ONLY. And the authorities knew that if six months had passed since being fully vaccinated, a booster shot was needed. They did not insist on it and put our young people who went out to enjoy themselves for Carnival at great risk. Now they offering free testing. Now that the stable is empty.
I hope that the eight hundred persons who have tested positive all recover. School is scheduled to reopen next week. With this fourth wave, I haven’t heard a peep out of the illustrious minister of education about the way forward. So some tough decisions have to be made. And soon. Happy New Year to all.
