BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Thursday 1st February 2024) – “…I’m getting calls and people are concerned. That’s why the board made a decision that I should come and clear the air; let people know that we are different entities and we have nothing really to do with the society.
We are up and running. The funeral home is up and running and that is why I am here to clear the air on any misunderstandings or misgivings.” So said Chairman of the Eastern Benevolent Society Funeral Home Theodore Brown during an appearance on ZIZ’s live broadcast ‘Morning Show’ with host G-Cue on Thursday 1st February 2024.
Such sentiments have been expressed in light of the controversial “investigation” announcement by the Eastern Benevolent Society in claiming that it is closed. The opening part of a press release issued – dated January 29, 2024 – by General Manager/Secretary Lincoln Carty highlighted: “Eastern Benevolent Society closes its doors January 31st 2024, after 43 years in business.
The Board of Directors of the Society made the difficult decision to cease operations immediately because the funds of the Society are insufficient to meet its financial obligations. The temporary closure of the Society facilitates a thorough investigation by the Registrar of Friendly Societies pending the dissolution or winding up of the Society.  Meanwhile, commenting on the difference between the two entities, Brown replied: “Well, the difference is that the funeral home, we take care of remains, human remains.
Just that. Society is a different entity. I don’t know what they do, but we are, we used to be together but after some differences with the funeral home board and the former manager, Lincoln Carty, we decided, look, let us relieve him of his position and we’re on our own.” Brown continued: “And I am very much as the public too is very much concerned because of how it went out via social.
I’m very much concerned about the social media and the hype it had and, you know, people call me from all overseas, ‘Mr. Brown what’s happening? I said, ‘I don’t know what is happening, but we are not in anything like that’ and just to let the public know that we are legally constituted, unlike the society, this funeral home is legally constituted.” “So I just want the public to know we are in good standing.
We are open for business and no time we say we’re going to close. So do not get mixed up with the funeral home and the society. Yes, we are the Eastern Benevolent Society funeral home and they are the Eastern Benevolent Society.
We are two entities. We are governed by a board of directors of which – NEWS – I’m the chairman…” Notably, Brown has been the Chairman since 2017. The Eastern Benevolent Society Funeral Home is located in the Camps Village community in Basseterre.
