BASSETERRE, St.Kitts– Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris had up to sometime after 4PM on Friday 6th October to apologise to Dr. Denzil L. Douglas for controversial comments he has made about dual citizenship but has failed to do so.
As a result, Dr. Douglas who is the Opposition Leader and immediate former Prime Minister, is talking to his lawyers about filing a lawsuit against Dr. Harris for defamation.
This media house was the first to get a comment from Dr. Douglas on the day that the 48-hour window closed.
He had exclusively informed that he had spoken to his lawyers.
“Well, I reiterate that the Prime Minister was malicious and deliberate, very misleading, very dishonest in stating that I have dual citizenship, and at one time specifically pointed to me having citizenship of Dominica and St.Kitts and Nevis. I categorically denied that and said that if he had not withdrawn that malicious statement and had not apologise, I would definitely take the matter to the lawyers.”
“Late this afternoon, I had the opportunity to speak with my lawyers and the matter is now being looked at by them,” Dr. Douglas shared.
The controversial matter came about after PM Harris, at his press conference held at Government Headquarters on Tuesday 3rd October, publicised the allegations concerning Dr. Douglas, falsely claiming that holds citizenship of another country besides St.Kitts-Nevis.
Appearing on the Party-sponsored ‘Issues’ Programme the following day (Wednesday 4th October), Dr. Douglas accused Dr. Harris of having “used our tax payers’ dollars to hold a press conference to spew untruth about the leader of the opposition.”
It was while addressing the matter on that programme that Dr. Douglas gave PM Harris 48 hours to retract the statement and apologise.
