The Labour Spokesman Editorial

Just like so many others across the region, we, the people of St. Kitts and Nevis, have fought, long and hard, to lift our people and our countries out of abject poverty and dismal living conditions. Several great political philosophers have, from time to time, pointed out that in a democracy, the people get the kind of government which they deserve. A part of what that means is that the people, who ultimately have the power, must be held responsible for those they elect to office.

When such governing factions realise that they have lost people’s favour, they resort to all manner of deceptions, corruption and illegalities to remain in power. They lie, openly buy votes, distort the electoral registers, import persons who are legally ineligible to cast ballots, and indulge in all manner of corruptions to thwart the will of the electorate.

Here in St. Kitts and Nevis, we are experiencing the early effects of having allowed certain viper-like elements to get their hands on the reins of power in our country, and getting rid of them is going to prove more difficult than should otherwise be the case. From the very moment that SCHEME UNITY got their hands on the government, it became abundantly clear that they were NOT what they had professed themselves to be.

They met a booming, very healthy economy, and immediately set about ripping-off the country. Along with that went the open and shameless corruption of virtually every facet of our national life. Dear people of St. Kitts and Nevis, our country is in serious trouble. It does not take much effort on the part of anyone to discern that our beloved country is on a fast track towards becoming a full blown criminal enterprise.
