BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (Friday 30th April 2021) — Nevis Premier Mark Brantley is condemning reports by social media users who circulated images of female students involved in a matter under investigation at a Nevis high school regarding inappropriate behaviour by two male teachers. Responding to questions at his monthly press conference on Wednesday 28th April 2021, Brantley said: “I saw some reports on social media which I thought were very unfortunate and I also saw some circulating of the images of the young women which I think were grossly irresponsible and ought to be condemned. I don’t know what has come upon our people that we act in this irresponsible and vicious way sometimes.”

Brantley confirmed the matter is being investigated but clarified that the Ministry of Education has received no reports of any actual physical contact between the teachers and the students. “I would say is that the matter is naturally being investigated and we of course insist that we must have safe environments for our children to go to school. Our females and our males must be in an environment that is safe,” he said. He encouraged teachers to “act with the necessary professionalism and decorum and appropriate behaviour at all times,” and noted that what may pass as adult conversation can be entirely inappropriate when directed at children. “The matter is well under investigation and will be dealt with through the usual channels and we will continue to provide every support to our students,” Brantley said.
