Editorial
A week ago today, the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis made an address to the nation over the airwaves. Essentially it was about the increasing number of COVID-19 cases affecting some of our people, and the actions which the government considered necessary to be taken in our efforts to bring the situation under control.
Rather unfortunately, the address turned out to have been a dud, and, from all appearances, seems to have created in the minds of many more confusion than there was before. It seems that, as a consequence, a number of follow-up efforts had to be made the next day in what were quite obvious attempts at damage control. Alas, while there was some measure of success in that regard, any number of questions have lived on in the minds of most, and sadly, ever so sadly, many individuals have persisted in behaviours which could only serve to exacerbate the problems. As an example, for almost all of the next day — Sunday 13 June — people found themselves subjected to the loud and very disturbing sounds of motor-cycles being raced all over the place.
Atop all of that, individuals in the government have been trotting out their own versions and prescriptions relative to COVID-19 matters. Well might one ask: “Are we really one country?” And on Saturday there came other pronouncements out of Charlestown. None of this augers well for our beloved country, and all of us, the people of St. Kitts and Nevis, deserve better. Much, much better. There is more in the mortar beside the pestle!
