UK travellers could be barred from entering the EU from 1 January as travel rules associated with EU membership expire and pandemic restrictions block entry. Unrestricted travel to countries within the bloc will no longer automatically apply to UK residents from then. Currently only eight countries with low coronavirus infection rates qualify for non-essential travel in the EU, and there are no current plans to add the UK to that list. Travel experts noted that individual EU member states dependent on tourism — such as the Canary Islands — may make exemptions for British tourists, but there is no obligation to do so. The situation could also be negotiated as part of ongoing UK-EU trade deal talks.
