The New Basseterre High School And The Aquifer By Earle Clarke: 14/06/2017

Then, there was the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan in March 2011. This facility was constructed in 1967 and commissioned on March 26th, 1971. Its reactor had a high atomic and earthquake safety level when it was made; despite all these safety precautions, an earthquake and a tsunami, wreaked disaster upon it, causing it to be shut down. All the precautions taken, yet it became vulnerable to the elements against which it was built to withstand. It would be naïve and very unprofessional of me to compare the disaster of a nuclear facility with the erection of a school on an Aquifer.

The lesson I was attempting to point out is that, with all the precautions one can take to prevent mistakes and calamities and disasters from taking place, our attempts and our efforts are not 100% fool proof. Mistakes can be made. Man made things only last for a while. Just imagine something going wrong with the collection of the stool and the urine and all that waste impurity entering our Aquifer and we drinking and bathing in that filth? Would we be able to sue the company in Miami which advised us that it would be safe so to construct the school there? By the way, before the construction, could we see the recommendation from this company so that we could digest it?

I would not like to see a situation arising in my country and East Basseterre, similar to that of the Chernobyl and the Fukushima nuclear disaster where the residents of East Basseterre has a High School built in the area, but the residents and the school children cannot quench their thirst, cook their meals, bathe their skins, water their flower gardens, grow their own food crops in the back of their yards, because the water in the Aquifer is contaminated from the waste impurities coming from the school children and their teachers.

Would the Bird Rock, Harbour View, Earle Morne, Frigate Bay, Potato Bay, South East Peninsular areas become ghost towns, their residents and owners being forced to move out of these areas due to the contamination of the Aquifer? The expensive homes for which the mortgage has not been fully paid, cannot even be sold, for the area has become devoid of water? Will the Marriott Resort Hotel have to close and its workers laid off? Will the Jack Tar Resort, the newly opened Christophe Harbour and all the tourist attractions on the South East Peninsular have be abandoned because of the infantile decisions made by the babes we so foolishly placed in the halls of Government? When will we as adults come to our senses and realize that we sinned and came short when we elected these babes and infants to perform mature people’s job?  When are we willing to say that enough is enough and we just can’t take any more nonsense from these little children?

Just imagine dear reader, that we must foot the bill for the construction of a Heroes Park on the Aquifer again, because our present Prime Minister, who backstabbed the Labour Party and its leadership in order to become the leader of the country, is mortally afraid to attend any function in St. Paul’s which is a Labour stronghold where the stature of the First National Hero is erected and which has enough space to erect 40 more National Heroes. Is it Because of this FEAR of the People he has betrayed, another National Heroes Park has to be constructed so that he could feel safe attending functions there and to supply his famalaay with the job of clearing and constructing this new Park?
