BASSETERRE, St.Kitts (MARCH 2018) –After over a month, Attorney General Vincent ‘Juicy’ Byron Jr. has finally broken his silence concerning allegations of sexual misconduct within the chambers of the Attorney General- a controversial subject brought up by the Opposition- but his response has left many people confused.
“I have checked with the office of the Attorney General and no one in that office has harassed Dr. Douglas in any way and especially not sexually either,” was part of what he said at the Prime Minister’s press conference held on Wednesday 14th March at Government Headquarters located on Church Street.
Opposition Leader of the St.Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, Dr. Denzil Douglas, who initially made the allegations about the Attorney General’s office during a January 2018 sitting of the National Assembly, has never pointed to himself as an individual making a personal accusation but instead has suggested that there are victim(s).
Hence, eyebrows have been raised by some members of the public over the substance of the Attorney General’s reply in relation to such serious allegations.
Byron, who is also the Minister of Justice, Legal Affairs and Communications was quizzed about the sexual assault claims while seated at the head table of this week’s press briefing during the question and answer segment.
A reporter, in seeking a comment on the matter, reminded Prime Minister Harris that at the last press briefing he (Harris) said Byron who was not present then would be better to make his own defence as a man of law.
In response Byron commented: “I understand that the only person who has made any claim that the office of the Attorney General has been harassing any citizen in this country has been the leader of the Opposition Dr. Denzil Douglas and the harassment claim as I understand, it came because an announcement was made in the National Assembly in the Parliament that Dr. Douglas had made a faux pas in accepting and using a diplomatic passport of Dominica and in response in the Parliament he threw out a claim that no attorney general would be able to do him anything and threw out this ridiculous claim that there is some harassment going on.”
The Attorney General continued: “I have checked with the office of the Attorney General and no one in that office has harassed Dr. Douglas in any way and especially not sexually either and so this idea of allegations as you’re saying being thrown out in the public to distract the citizens from a very serious matter involving the use by Dr. Douglas of a diplomatic passport for another country which is (offensive) according to our constitution.”
He ended his reply further claiming that no one is harassing Dr. Douglas.
“I am not certain how that Dr. Douglas claimed that the Attorney General’s office has been harassing him. It has nothing to do with domestic violence either so that but that would be my answer to that question.”
