CEMSS Wins Giant Malt Relay Championships

Basseterre, St. Kitts (JANUARY 2018): The Charles E. Mills Secondary School (CEMSS) formerly Sandy Point High, on Sunday 28th January dethroned the Washington Archibald High School (WAHS) to win the 2018 Giant Malt Relay Championships.

The event, now in its second year, was held at the Kim Collins Athletic Stadium.

From a field of eleven (11) competitors (eight (8) Secondary Schools and three (3) Athletic Clubs) CEMSS emerged victorious having amassed a total of 18 medals, which included 10 gold medals, five silver and 3 bronze medals.

The WAHS followed closely behind in second place with 15 medals. This included 6 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze.

The Charlestown Secondary School out of Nevis captured third place with a total of 8 medals. 4 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze.

The other competing schools and clubs were the Extreme Velocity Track Club, Basseterre High School, Fast Twitch Track Club, Cayon High School, Gingerland Secondary School, Verchilds High School, Charlestown Secondary School Club, Saddlers Secondary School and the Immaculate Conception Catholic School.

The Relay competition saw the return of the Cheerleading competition, which was won by the WAHS.

Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee and Track and Field Coordinator at the Department of Sport, Mr. Timothy Morton said, “We had a very successful meet yesterday. Congratulations are extended to Charles E. Mills on capturing the championship this year.”

Mr. Morton also extended appreciation to the sponsors – Carib Breweries, Carambola, FLOW, Ministry of Education, Department of Sport and Island Purified Water.

“Special thanks is extended to the St. Kitts Nevis Amateur Athletic Association (SKNAAA) for their technical assistance and support,” Mr. Morton added.

All proceeds from the Giant Malt Relay Championships will be used to purchase sports/physical education equipment for the schools.

The relay championships is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Education and the Department of Sport.
